About Jan Bidwell
I am honored to be the Democratic candidate for the NJ Senate in the 39th district. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and also hold a Masters of Social Work from New York University.
I am a licensed clinical social worker and mental health professional with over thirty years of experience. My life has been dedicated to working with individuals, children, and families to overcome obstacles. My mission is to see that they reach their greatest possible potential.
Recognized by the State of New Jersey for my dedication to children’s rights, I was appointed to the New Jersey Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect. I have also served on the NJ State Division of Prevention and Community Partnership’s Advisory Board.
I was named to the Governor’s Transition Team that created new policy and provided advice to prevent child abuse. The state Department of Human Services appointed me to a panel that restructured the Division of Youth and Family Services.
A founding member and president of three Bergen-based non-profit groups, I spearheaded organizations to protect abused and neglected children, to combat poverty, and to assist Upper Ringwood families who struggle with Superfund site contamination.
Our district needs a Senator who understands todays challenges of constituents who are buckling under the burden of high taxes and budget cuts, historic unemployment rates, and who need more efficient and cost effective mass transit to get to work.
Homeowners are in fear of more super storms with record flooding and damaging winds. We must address how to protect our homes, minimize damage and loss, as well as restore confidence and security to our neighbors and communities.
I have opened a dialogue with Orange and Rockland Utilities. I am working with them to find better ways to communicate during emergencies and learning how to be proactive in taking steps to storm proof our property and our current energy sources as much as possible.
I want to serve the 39th District through bipartisan partnership in the legislature. I want to represent all of the middle class, and the most vulnerable among us; those who feel they have no voice.
New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the nation. We can do better. We can work to share and consolidate services and lower our taxes. We will not diminish emergency services, such as police departments or firehouses; we will only seek to ensure they have the guidance and tools they need to improve their response, while being ever mindful of safety.
New Jersey has the fourth highest unemployment rate in the nation. We can promote job creation by giving tax incentives to both small and large companies through a variety of programs that will create a better climate for business to be able to hire more employees.
I have been a longtime advocate and supporter of Marriage Equality. New Jersey is still one of the hold outs in passing this important legislation; I want to be the catalyst for change and help to make this bill a reality.
To continue on equality, we can ensure that women receive equal pay and have access to outstanding health care. No family thrives when mothers, daughters, and sisters are left behind.
I have helped families in real time, in their daily lives. I see how lives in our community are deeply impacted by narrow-minded policies that are not mindful of their needs, but rather what is politically or personally motivated. I am committed to serve everyone in the 39th district by working for smart, responsive legislation.
There is much to be done. Please explore my web site, read my bio, my issue statements and join the campaign. I need your help. Together we can move New Jersey forward!
